CAO points 2025 — common questions

CAO Round 1 offers for 2025 were released in mid-August 2025, a few days after Leaving Cert results were published by the State Examinations Commission. Round 2 offers followed in late August 2025.
It is impossible to predict exactly, but the general trend across most courses has been a gradual increase of 3–8 points per year since 2021. High-demand courses like Computer Science and AI have seen the fastest rises. Use 2025 points as your baseline and aim to be 5–10 points above the 2025 cut-off for your target course.
The complete official CAO points list for all courses and all rounds is published by the CAO at cao.ie. Individual college websites also publish their own cut-off points, often in more detail and sorted by faculty.
Round 1 is the main offer round released in mid-August. It fills the majority of college places. Round 2 is a smaller follow-up round in late August for places that became available after Round 1 (due to deferrals, declines etc.). Round 1 points are almost always higher than Round 2 because fewer places are available in Round 2. The points shown on this page are Round 1 cut-offs.
Yes, significantly. Medicine at TCD required 597 points in 2025, while RCSI required 538 — a difference of 59 points for effectively the same qualification. Always research points for your specific target college, not just the national average for a subject area.
